Visit Cannes
Even if the business tourism has made the reputation of Cannes, the individual tourists also have an important place. The gambling made the reputation of the Palm Beach Casino which is on the point of the Croisette, the Carlton Casino and the Casino Croisette.
You should also visit the heights of the old town called Suquet with its streets and alleys, overlooking the quays and the old port. Here is the historical centre of Cannes. There you will find the former castle of Cannes, which now hosts the museum of Castre with its ethnologic master pieces from the five continents and the paintings from the so-called “Provencal schools” dating from the 19th century.
In this quarter, every month of July, the musical nights of the Suquet are organized.
Also visit one of the most lively quarters of the town, around the rue Saint Antoine and the halls of Forville with its covered market where the inhabitants and tourists come to buy vegetables or typical “Provencal” products.
As regards shopping, the Rue d’Antibes with its boutiques, art galleries, cinemas and banks is the place to go.
If you prefer the calm and peace rather than the liveliness of the Croisette, take the boat to the Lérins Islands, – just 20 min in the Bay and facing the town in the Bay of Cannes.
On the Saint Honorat island, one has to visit the fortified monastery and the church of the abbey. In the vineyards, the Cistercian monks produce about 40 000 bottles of wine every year. On the other island named Saint Marguerite, do not miss to visit the Fort Royal, a place where in former times, prisoners such as the “Masque de fer” were kept and which belongs to the city of Cannes since 199.
